Dakota - What's up! My name is Dakota, I'm 19, from Chicago . I've been producing and DJ'ing for about 6 years now, but just recently started getting into the whole EDM scene this year.
FY! - So how did it all begin?
D - Well, It's funny how it all started. I kind of just fell into it on accident. I've always been a hip hop fan for a long time and one day I made a CD full of instrumentals from my favorite songs to bump in my car. I was just cruising, thinking to myself: "That beat is so sick. How did they make this? What did they use? Was it really that hard?" All these questions led me to doing research on the internet, and then I found myself at my local music store asking more questions. I met a guy named Tony, who had all the answers. I would come in every day after school and Tony would take his lunch break, sit down with me at the Yamaha Motif XF8 display model, and we would make beats until it was time for him to clock back in. We did that for a whole year, he taught me everything I know today and it was just history from then on.
FY! - Do you remember your first gig? How did it go?
D - My first legit gig was just recently actually. It was a DJ competition at The Mid Nightclub here downtown. I was one of the 6 finalists out of 125 DJ's in our area. It was my first time being able to play my new stuff for a crowd, so I was quite nervous to say the least. Turns out everyone got really into it, and it ended up being a huge success for me.
FY! - What kind of equipment do you work with?
D - I run a very minimal set up. In the studio I work with an M-Audio Axiom 25 midi controller, and Logic Studio Pro on a Mac. When I'm mixing live, I use a Hercules RMX controller routed into my Mac which is running Virtual DJ. A lot of people put down Virtual DJ performance wise, but it gets the job done for me. I'm a firm believer that you don't need thousands of dollars worth of equipment to make good music and so far It's worked out great for me.
FY! - Are you self taught? Or did you have a helping hand?
D - Well, as I said, my friend Tony really taught me most of what I know today. As I started digging deeper, looking for new sounds, that's when I started teaching myself. New programs and plug-ins are popping up every day, so learning how to operate them is very beneficial. Sometimes I'll spend hours just tinkering around with different sounds to see what else I can come up with.
FY! - What song is on your mp3 player right now?
D - Loud Pipes - Ratatat
FY! - Who is your favorite DJ? Why?
D - I wouldn't say I have a specific "Favorite DJ", but I've been listening to a lot of Borgore lately. His drops and bass lines are just filthy, and I love a good dose of grime in my music.
FY! - Your track 'The Beginning' is filthy nasty! What was your mindset when making it?
D - 'The Beginning' is the first track off my new EP. I usually I don't have a certain mindset when I'm in the studio; I just make what comes to me at that certain time. But I knew with the first track, I really needed something that would draw people in. I wanted people to be like, "Whoa, this is really different."
FY! - When you're not touring or producing, what do you like to do for fun?
D - When I'm not in the studio making music, I'm with my family or friends enjoying life. I spend a lot of time with my family and girlfriend, whether it’s grilling out in the backyard or spending the day downtown.
FY! - If you had a time machine what year would you go back to? Why?
D - If i had a time machine, I would totally go back to the 90's (My childhood). Being a kid, you have no deadlines, you have no job, and you have no worries!
FY! - Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
D - 5 years from now I see myself doing the same things I enjoy now and more. I still have a ton of learning and experiencing what life truly has to offer.
FY! - Any shout outs you would like to make?
D - I would like to thank my family, friends, and my wonderful girlfriend for all the love and support they've given me lately. I could not have accomplished this much without them. I would also like to thank everyone over at FCK YES! for giving me this opportunity to expose my music and show everyone a little more about me. I look forward to working with you more in the future. Thank you!
And we would like to thank Dakota for taking the time for us! Thank you sir.
