From DJ'ing to promoting to putting down some serious travel time, Kate!Rush is a busy busy lady. BUT, she was kind enough to spare a few and answer some questions for FCK YES! On top of that she dropped a nasty-bo-basty mix for you to cop for free! WHAT? I said for free. FCK YES!
FCK YES! How did you get the name Kate Exclamation Point Rush?
Kate!Rush - I was sitting in my living room about 4 years ago with my friends Lost Monster & Woo, trying to come up with a clever pseudonym when Woo asked me what my last name is. "Rush" was my response. All that needed to be said after that was "Why are we even talking about this anymore? You were born with a perfect name." I also dig symmetry, Kate Rush looks nice and even, but the ! ties everything together perfectly. My middle initial is also E, so it works in a few ways, like, If you flip the ! upside down its a lower case "i". "KiR= Keepin' it Real".
FY! What are you doing right now?K!R - Waiting for chicken to defrost so I can go on a massive cooking spree. I do that a lot, cooking and dj'ing keep me so very happy. I just finished a couple of fliers & base promo for shows I've got coming up and I'll be starting in on an exclusive mix this afternoon that's going to be played on the radio in NYC before I play there next month.
FY! How did you get started DJing?
K!R - The whole bit is a pretty long story involving lies, deception and anguish, but it all really boiled down to being surrounded by the right people when I went to my first party when I was fresh 18. Lady Crysis was headlining, my mind had already been blown a half dozen times that night & that was the icing on the cake. I watched her command a room, guiding ~150 people to these pristine sounds coming from turntables! She was so graceful and amazing and she just exuded mindsex. I went home that night, and asked a newfound friend to show me how to use his turntables. Lab'ratory did one thing that I will always be forever grateful for; he ripped all the cords out of the back of the mixer and told me to figure it out or I couldn't use his gear. I figured it out pretty easily, but then it took me almost a full 3 days of nonstop meddling with his breaks & trance wax to successfully land my first blend. It was the original The Lion Sleeps tonight & a Paul Van Dyk tune. I'd love to say that I remember exactly which one it is, but by day 3 of nonstop music, it's all kind of a blur. I bought my first Technics a few weeks later and it's been a wild ride since.
FY! You play shows all over the Northeast on the regular... that must be hard no?
K!R - I thought about this for a few minutes. I wanted to complain about how I've missed my bed for the last two summers, but I've been blessed to be able to spend 12 of the last 24 months pretty much on tour. Come May, I'm gone & I don't really get home again until Sept/Oct. Last summer I put back 12,555 miles between cars, trains, buses & planes. Keeping up with constantly moving around, living out of a bag & being in a different city/state every week can be intense, but I really don't think anything makes me happier. I want the full experience. I want to see the world, for its beauty and it's variety of people. I want to see how the whole world lives and how the whole world loves. Music is one thing that everyone can share & I need to be a part of that. I serve no other purpose here.
FY! What crew/region is putting on the best parties right now?
K!R - It really depends on what you're looking for. My personal mecca as of right now is reconstrvct in Brooklyn. I've never been more impressed, astounded, satisfied or moved by another event time and time again. Buffalo, NY always has a special place in my heart though, I absolutely love love love love playing there. I don't know if it's because they serve until 4 am, but those kids go hard and I can't get enough. Worcester, MA has been a pretty wonderful home base for me in New England. Electric*Tuesdays provides a taste of what raving used to be. Sincere, open minded, truly about the love.
FY! Where do you see the scene in 5 years?
K!R - In 5 years, yeeesh. Everything is changing so quickly now, the last 2-3 years has produced this massive influx in media-awareness & technology has made the art of dj'ing a completely different animal. I'm glad that there are so many eyes on EDM but at the same time there was something beautiful and pure about being subjected to grody clubs because they were the only people who would take us in. I'll be here. I know the people who brought me up will be here. The true soldiers with stand the test of time.
FY! Be it on stage.. or in your car... what is your go to track?
K!R - That is an almost impossible question to answer. I have some producers and mixes that I can't get over and just rinse for years- but then there are tunes that I get crazy addicted to for a short time. I'll listen to the same tune on repeat for hours at a time. It's bad.
FY! Funniest thing that ever happened at an event?
K!R - Depends on your definition of funny… I have more horrifying stories than funny, unless you count the time that I was in Buffalo and this kid kept requesting Skrillex. It's no secret- I can't stand that shit, it takes away all the awesomeness of real dustup. I also have a pretty wretched time remembering every person I've met in the last 6 years- (smoking as much as I do doesn't really help…) so I eventually had to be straight up with him and tell him "I can't remember if I've met you before and you're fck*ing with me and I'm a douchebag and don't remember you, or I have no idea who you are at all." He says "We've never met, can you play Skrillex or what?" I booped him on the nose and closed the door to the booth. I imagine this falls under the category of DJ humor, as a fan, it's probably not funny. Though, a proper fan would know better than to ask. Yeah, I said it.
FY! If you could chill with any producer/DJ for 1 hour who would it be?
K!R - That's another tough one. I would be compelled to reach for some of the cats off Deep Medi, but equally compelled to kick around with Above&Beyond or Jaytech, or a handful of people off Metalheadz.
FY! Tell us about your 'Dream on Little Dreamer' mix:
K!R - Dream On Little Dreamer is a slightly new sound I'm toying with. Since I've been away from Upstate, I've broken way away from aggressive dubstep and have fallen completely into 2step, garage, medi and the teeniest bit of trap. That's what happened here. We can talk about Jungle some other time. That's a whole separate beast.
FY! Whats next for K!R?
K!R - Same thing we do everyday Pinky.
FY! Fill in the blanks: My favorite _________ and ___________
K!R - My favorite book series is Little House On the Prairie and ain't no shame in it.
Thanks so much hun! Much love. Show Kate!Rush some love on Facebook.
