We caught up with the dynamic duo Oliver just as they head out on the Zedd's Moment of Clarity tour and got the lowdown on what makes Oliver... Oliver. Aside from their stint on the Clarity tour, you can catch Oliver at Electric Zoo this weekend in New York City. Now see the awesome sauce below!
FCK YES! - In a
Oliver - Oliver Goldstein and Vaughn Oliver, seemed like a no
brainer.
FY! - If I close my eyes while listening to your music I can
literally taste the 80's. What is your
inspiration during track production?
Oliver - We're both very influenced by the music we grew up on, the
stuff we heard on the radio when we were young. In the 90s we were both hip-hop
kids so I think we take that DIY approach to making music and sampling old
records. We try to take the things we love about disco/house of the 70s/80s and
give it our little twist with more modern production techniques.
FY! - What was your initial reaction after hearing that you'll
be playing at Electric Zoo?
Oliver - We're very excited, the line-up is insane, so many artists
we admire and respect.
FY! - Working as a duo must be awesome! Are there ever any times of "creative
differences"?
Oliver - Yeah, we have our differences sometimes, but we always get
there in the end. If one of us isn't really into what we're making we usually
just move on to something we're both vibing on.
FY! - When it's time to relax and unplug what do you do?
Oliver - Eat and sleep. Right now we spend so much time at the studio
the only time we take off is when we travel really.
FY! - What has been your favorite venue that you've
played?
Oliver - The Hard Fest events our always a highlight for us. As far
as a club though, I think Social Club in Paris
was one of the most fun times we've had playing.
FY! - Do you go into any given performance with a game
plan? Or is it all on the fly as far as
track progression?
Oliver - We like to be prepared, but when it's time to play it's all
on the fly. You have to be able to adapt to what people are responding to, at
least at our level.
FY! - High fives or thumbs ups?
Oliver - High fives all day!
FY! - Do you practice every single day?
Oliver - Almost every day, not sure what else to do with my time.
Even when we're not making Oliver stuff we like to mess around with synths or
just sit and play piano for hours.
FY! - Who are you most excited to share the stage with at
Electric Zoo?
Oliver - It's always amazing to share to stage with everyone on Fools
Gold, it's such a diverse label and everyone compliments each other so well.
FY! - What is your current studio set up?
Oliver - We share a studio, Oliver's room has about 30 vintage
synthesizers and lots of guitars/bass guitars. My set up is real basic, a
computer, monitors, midi controller and turntables.
FY! - Tell us what's next for Oliver.
Oliver - We're going on tour Zedd and Alex Metric (Clarity Tour) all
of September. When we get back it's going to be all about finishing and
releasing new music, we have a ton of unfinished stuff that we need to get
to.
FY! - Finish this sentence:
New dj's should…..
Oliver - Be original and take chances. It's easy to go out and play
all Beatport Top 10 music and call yourself a DJ. Real DJs spend hours and
hours looking for music that they believe in, and it shows.
FY! - Excellent! Thank you so much.
