Chances are if you went to the Firepower Reloaded tour stop at The Westcott Theater this past Tuesday, that you have been waiting since last October. Needless to say that the amount of buzz surrounding this new date was enough to power the 50,000 watt sound system that thundered the Westcott with bass. Ash Mac and I were most certainly ready to get our womp on and kick that ish up to eleven. (pictures after the review)
A tip of the hat to the entry crew at the venue, because we were searched and checked in within a minute of arrival. All the attendees were greeted with smiles and clear directions on how to keep the line flowing as smooth as a creamy synth in a Tiesto track. The transition from the cold outside into the warm was a bit of a shock, and what shocked me more was all the girls in tutus and tank tops. How in the hell did they not freeze to death? It's upstate, NY... in January. Anyways.. too each their own.
We got there just in time to catch Rekoil. This dude dropped a level of thrash/trash dubstep meets deathstep meets destruction step. that I've never heard before. The crowd was a bit withdrawn at first. But, then as the bass bombs kept on coming the hands kept flying up at every drop. I personally thought his set was a 8.5 out of 10. It wasn't your typical womp womp womp womp, but rather a womp distortion distortion womp.
Onto GRiZ. Talk about a juxtaposition in musical sounds. You go from the bass sounding like the terminator having sex with a microwave with a spoon in it on high (which is a good thing - I promise) to bass pumping jams like you're cruising down the sunset strip. Never have I ever seen someone bust out a saxophone live before I witnessed GRiZ do it on Tuesday night. It worked in flawlessly with his set. When I saw the sax I thought "ohhhh boy here we go" but it wasn't forced at all. GRiZ's set had a Pretty Lights feel that had the crowd swerving and more than amped up for....
Datsik. Datsik. Datsik. This man is on fire. From countless original to remixed tracks and tours that span the world, Datsik sure as FCK knows how to bring the party. The whole night leading up to his set I was wondering "what the FCK is behind that curtain with the giant Rockstar logo on it?" In comes Datsik on in this bass-ship/light mansion/techno colored escape pod that looked like it was either going to take off into flight or destroy the venue with bass. Thankfully, it was the latter. While I was in the pit snapping up shots I had to do my best to hold still. The amount of bass coming from the stacks literally had my shirt trying to blow up around my head. Plus I mean... when your front stage center and Datsik is at the helm you can't help but get your dance on. After I retreated back to the crowd I was both shocked an thoroughly pleased to hear him drop a drum n bass track. To me nothing compliments the broken beat of a dubstep track more than the broken beat of a drum n bass track. Then I was completely floored to hear him drop two more before the end of his set. His entire set was as lively as the bass-ship he rode in on. Thank you sir.
Datsik brought the party to Syracuse on Tuesday. After the show Ash Mac and I were outside spreading the FCK YES! love (handing out stickers) and we saw nothing smiling faces. I asked a few people what their favorite part of the show was and the unanimous answer was Datsik and his light ball thing a ma-jig. Kudos to Rockstar Energy Drink, and the entire line up of the Firepower Reloaded Tour for the awesome show. This is definitely one for the books.
