SKRILLEX - LEAVING EP

"Leaving", is like Skrillex reiterating an original form of dubstep.  From the drum beat, to the modified vocals, to the EP art, so far this EP mimics Burial’s debut album, “Untrue”, most notably the track Archangel.  The deep eerie sound is a fresh step in an organic direction.  So far this EP is proving ground for Skrillex’s name in electronic music.  After taking the over with his wubs and womps since 2010, it’s a breath of fresh air to hear how diverse and emotional Skrillex can produce his music.

"The Reason" leaves off with a similar mood like “Leaving”, but more upbeat.  In a sense, his “Leaving” stage was put forth with a depressive overtone.  His reasons for said leaving are just as melancholy, this is Skrillex- a dance and party extraordinaire.  As a whole, this EP may be to cope with the separation between he and Ellie Goulding, but fuck celebrity gossip, so I’ll move on.  The synth hook for this song is like a dolphin jumping out of the sad sea of “Leaving.”  Damn it’s good, so punchy, and it nearly talking truth through music.  This breakdown is real as well.  By that I mean, there are so many elements to it. Personally breakdowns bring about aggression; when a breakdown comes on, be yourself and go fucking nuts, just dance, dance, dance.  At the same time, I can’t help but smile at this.  It’s sound is so nostalgic (think Fingerbib by Aphex Twin).  “The Reason” is the perfect buildup to the emotional carnage of “Leaving.”

With "Scary Bolly Dub", Skrill reinvents what he’s known for.  Producing a familiar sound and even sample his past tracks, the reggae/dub intro let’s you know what’s up; he is still the king of modern dance, dubstep, most of what he innovates.  Here we go, used right of the bat is a sample from “Fucking Die” from “My Name Is Skrillex,” his first EP.   I really wonder what Sonny thinks of his music; is this drastic change saying something?  Does this familiar resolution relate to emotions of “Leaving” and “The Reason”. Possibly a way of saying through difficult times one can reinvent themselves, while staying true to themselves and come out a better person.  Another sample used is from “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” of the EP of the same name.  The phrase,  “Look at this, I’m a coward too, you don’t need to hide my friend, for I am just like you.” An interesting phrase to choose as a conclusion for the journey this EP has been.  It’s too bad that the ending is a bit abrupt, but it definitely has me waiting for his next release.

Listen below.  Then show Skrillex some love on Facebook
